At Home Depot

Three things happened to me yesterday at the Home Depot:

First, an older gentleman yelled from the other end of an aisle to ask me where the mulch was.  I directed him outside to the garden section, still shaking my head as to why he would ask me.  Then I realized I was wearing my orange polo shirt.

I looked all over for the Home Depot executive that said, "No!" in the board meeting where they discussed adding Spanish to every single item and sign in their stores.  I never found him.

Finally, as I was headed to my car, I saw a dude walking into the store, just putting his t-shirt back on in time to hit the entrance.  C'mon, I know it was hot, but only about 85° at the time.

Getting Noticed for Using Twitter

In my last post about my not-so-rapid climb to the top of Google when searching for "Jason Boyette" I forgot to mention that I was also recently named as one of the many Joomla people on Twitter.

David Towers posted this article on his site GoodWebPractices.com naming dozens of people that develop web sites using the Joomla Content Management System (which I do), who are also using their Twitter accounts to tweet about all that good stuff (which I do, too).

I'm not sure if that's what helped me get to #1 on Google's search results or not, but it is nice to know that people are reading what you write.

Bowling for EQ

Jason BoyetteYeah, so I had this event at work yesterday. It started out like, "Hey, let's ditch work for half the day and go bowling!" It ended up with, "Why don't we pick team names, wear crazy costumes, and bowl wearing more costumes, bug-eye glasses, and more?"

Our team was named Rock 'N' Bowl, but I seem to look more like a gangsta than a rocker. I had a great time, and my team even managed to win the thing somehow, despite my whopping 107 score (and that was bowling regular style).

You may recognize Dave Dietz in there; he was part of my team too. He managed a score worth announcing.

Now Microblogging Using HelloTxt

As I mentioned in my earlier article about Twitter, microblogging is a way for people to update their "status" throughout the day, from various different places, using several technologies.

For example, I could log on to Facebook, and change my status to "back to work" on a Monday morning.  Or, I could send a text message to Twitter to say I'm "sleeping in late on Saturday - yeah right!"  You can even update your status via instant messaging.

There are dozens of these microblogging websites, each with a different look and feel, and levels of popularity.  I'm currently using Facebook, Twitter, and my latest:  Plurk.  Plurk is cool because its widget that shows my last several updates works well on this web site - you'll notice it starting today.

Now, on to HelloTxt.  Since there are so many microblogging sites, and you usually have to log on with different e-mails or user names and passwords, HelloTxt makes it easy to update all of your accounts at the same time.  You can pick specific sites to update, or update them all!  Sweet.

Fireworks Tonight

Tonight we're headed out to Greenfield Village to catch a delightful music and fireworks show to celebrate America's 232nd birthday.  The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is performing Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, and it says there will even be live cannon fire!  Should be exciting with our new baby.

This an event paid for by my employer, EQ, so we'll be joined by my entire IT department and their families.
